The amount of traffic and the content of heavy traffic with high axle loads on motorways is steadily increasing. Up to date we are using the traditional asphalt and concrete pavement surfaces. They are designed for a service life of 30 years, including the necessary maintenance measures. To guarantee mobility in the future pavement structures with a maximum service life, a minimum of necessary maintenance measures and a minimum of traffic interruption for maintenance will be needed. Maybe the traditional pavement structures will not be able to fulfill these requirements in the future. But the materials asphalt and concrete in combination (composite structure) can be a potential solution.
This guides to a rigid construction layer of CRCP and a flexible wearing course of asphalt. The construction layer will be designed for a service life of 50 years or even more without maintenance measures needed. The asphalt layer will be replaced regularly with low effort and in the hours of low traffic volume. In the framework of this project existing experiences with this type of construction will be collected, testings on the topic of “asphalt on concrete” in the laboratory and in the field are being realized, a proposal for a new design process for the composite structure will be made, a field trial will take place on a German motorway, proposals for a further optimization will be formulated and a manual with the new findings will be created.
