SolaRoad has integrated solar cells in the road surface to convert sunlight into electricity. The road surface is equipped with a transparent top layer and intelligent optics, which concentrate the sunlight and guide it to the solar cells.
SolaRoad can make a significant contribution towards an energy neutral transportation and mobility system.
A first prototype of SolaRoad has been developed in 2010. A first pilot is planned in Noord-Holland in 2012. A section of approx. 100 m of a bicycle road of 4 m width will be covered with SolaRoad.
The pilot will last for 5 years to investigate issues on the performance and long-term behaviour of SolaRoad under real conditions. The harvested energy will be fed into the power grid. Future steps in the development of SolaRoad include pilots and applications on regular roads.
