Adaptable Automated Resilient
An advanced and affordable transport infrastructure is key to creating the economic opportunities of tomorrow. With this in mind, FEHRL has set itself the challenge to develop a truly inspiring vision for how roads will be built and maintained in the 21st century. The result is the Forever Open Road – a revolutionary concept that will bring together the best of what we have today with the best of what’s to come, and produce the fifth generation road. A road that is adaptable, automated and climate change resilient, based upon a concept for building and maintaining roads that can be applied whether motorway, rural or urban, and regardless of region or country, as the video below highlights.
By bringing together innovative technologies and concepts, and by harvesting knowledge and expertise from across Europe, this new generation road will transform the way roads are built, designed, maintained and operated.
At the beginning of 2013, roadmaps for each of the three above elements were published. Each roadmap identifies the priorities for future research actions up to 2030 and build on a basis of national and industrial programmes on road research, truly rendering Forever Open Road a programme of programmes. They include chapters on the specific milestones and reference to aligned national programmes.
FOR x 4 initiative
FEHRL launched Forever Open Road in 2011. Now with the first projects underway, FEHRL is developing the ‘sister’ programmes Forever Open Railway, Forever Open River and Forever Open Runway for railway, river and runway infrastructure, respectively. Together these four concepts constitute the FOR x 4 initiative on transport infrastructure, as the video below highlights.
A FORx4 co-modal transport initiative document was published late in 2013 for consultation, which is a 'point of view' document focusing on four domains of Infrastructure, Technology, Governance and Customers.
